Hosannas are a psychedelic dance outfit based in Portland, Oregon. Brothers Brandon and Richard Laws have been writing and performing music together, across a wealth of genres and under a variety of monikers, for over a decade. Richard was a student of jazz--having studied under under Mel Graves--turned ambient synth experimentalist. Brandon found equal joy in beat-making and guitar wizardry, exercising the latter as a touring member of indie rock acts like Ramona Falls and Aan. Their work as Hosannas is the sound of two incredibly intimate musical collaborators braiding together their multitudinous musical fascinations, into a single odd and splendid textile. We might consider it Pop gone on an Ayahuasca safari. This is music that tantalizes us to dance and sway, propelling us forward through a Labyrinthian voyage into the psyche.
There's a theory among classical scholars that artist green rooms are called green rooms because they were established in ancient times for performers to pay tribute to Dionysus - the god of nature, wildness, decadence and chaos. There is a type of sacred drama inherent in live music, when a performer seizes on this mythology of wildness. This is a mythology that Hosannas deeply understand and celebrate in their exhilarating live performances, where the two brothers access an intuitive place of deep harmony with one another. This is most prevalent in their vocal harmonies, where at times, it's near impossible to discern where one brother's voice ends and the other's begins. It's no surprise that they've been asked to share the stage with the likes of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Dan Deacon, Akron Family, The Dodos, Gardens & Villa and The Shins.
