Music does not exist. Musicians exist — and so do the listeners. But everything that resonates between them is a construction in their heads. If Martin Kohlstedt understood one thing it is how dependent and at the same time powerless he is of and in this dynamic. So the young composer ventures to provoke musical conversations whose boundaries must never be settled, must remain vague and open. With the aid of black and white keys, hammers and steel strings he cunningly molds first ideas into sound. But if space and audience demand it he purposefully falls silent abruptly — or electrifies your synapses with clamour and bass. Sometimes Martin Kohlstedt is uncanny in his wish to rely on us, the listener, to fully lose himself in his music. For him that is existential — and dangerous. Maybe he does not even realize what splendid cathedrals we build whilst venturing through his restlessness and that we tear them down again with his help.
The first two piano albums »Tag« and »Nacht«, conceived as complements, were first followed by their respective edits and reworks featuring artists like Douglas Dare, Christian Löffler and FM Belfast. Beginning Fall 2016 the young german composer Martin Kohlstedt develops his modular compositions, shifting between the piano and electronics, further — not in the studio but on intimate concerts in Germany and all over Europe — to pursue the idea that music is not something fixed and finished but in continuos conference between musician and listener.
