Following on from another amazing Summer, which has seen us put on a party at the infamous Studio 338 in London and feature at festivals across Europe, it is time for us to return to The Beaver Works in Leeds for the start of a new academic year. On Wednesday 21st September we will be throwing our big annual relaunch party during Fresher's Week. Joining us in the basement will be Hotflush head-honcho Scuba and Salt Mines co-founder, on a rare trip over from Australia, Shedbug. In the Red Room, we will be joined by legendary Nordic disco pioneer, Lindstrom who will be playing live alongside rising star and Flux resident, Dan Shake.

Since 2003, Paul Rose – better known to the world as techno maverick Scuba – and his Hotflush imprint have shaped the direction of the electronic scene’s bass-heavy landscape more than most. Starting with the underground garage sound that became dubstep, and gradually teasing its dark, bass-heavy sonics through abstract electronica, jacking house and cavernous techno, they are the underground tastemakers behind era-defining club smashes like Joy Orbison’s ‘Hyph Myngo’ and 2013’s ‘Untitled’, the ubiquitous piano house banger by Paul Woolford. They also launched the careers of innovators as diverse as Mount Kimbie, George FitzGerald, and Sepalcure. As a DJ and producer, meanwhile, Rose’s personal achievements have seen him ascend to rank among the UK’s electronic luminaries. A musical contrarian, Scuba has deliberately pushed against dance music currents, changing course when it suits him. As a label, Hotflush’s output has changed as much as the constantly developing Scuba sound. After a period where album projects were the norm on the label, the recent direction has been towards, as he puts it, “the grassroots nitty-gritty dance-scene stuff”. The future for Rose and the Hotflush label looks as diverse and exciting as always and we are excited to welcome him to his first Flux.
Raised on country and western music in the outskirts of the Norwegian oil town Stavanger, Lindstrom now lives in Oslo where he is making contemporary disco and running the Feedelity label. Claiming that Hans-Peter Lindstrom is closing in on Henrik Ibsen and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as being Norway's poster boy of choice (quoting an article on Piccadilly Records website) is obviously quite an overstatement, but nonetheless his original approach to dance music is currently causing quite a stir. It's quite impossible to pinpoint the exact origins of his musical originality, although traces might be found in the aforementioned background. Coming from gospel choirs, country and rock bands without any knowledge of dance music whatsoever, he entered the scene rather freed from any preconceived notions of style and trend parameters. He hung on to the habit of making music by playing melodies on real instruments, and the fact that he plays all the instruments on his recordings - guitars, bass, keyboards, drums and percussion- enables him to make music inspired by whatever his influences are at the moment Last time we spoke to him he was mostly listening to 60s and 70s rock and pop, and he reckons that music from that era is much more interesting, both in terms of song writing and production values. Lindstrom today enjoys a cult-like status within dance music circles, and although the humble guy himself seems quite happy doing what he loves on an underground scale, it will be an interesting watch to see what the future holds for the Norwegian talent.
Perhaps best known as the first ever non-Detroit artist to be signed to Moodymann’s prestigious label Mahogani Music, London based Dan Shake has been making his mark on dance-floors all over Europe, both with his distinctive productions and his expertise in working a crowd. The former Leeds student secured the feat in a charmingly anachronistic fashion: having just watched Kenny Dixon Jr perform alongside the 3 Chairs at Dimensions Festival, Dan simply handed over a demo CD with a collection of unreleased tracks. Moodymann was hooked almost instantly, taking the first plunge on welcoming an outsider into his tight-knit crew of Detroit strong artists. Citing influence from the layered percussive rhythms of Afrobeat pioneers such as Tony Allen and Fela Kuti, the soul-drenched sampling of J Dilla and the kind of dark, dense grooves laid out by contemporary producers such as Flying Lotus and Motor City Drum Ensemble, Dan's situation in winding up on a label renowned for encompassing all those traits is obviously a blessing for the young producer. If this wasn’t enough for the restless Shake, he also launched his own label ‘SHAKE’ back in September, of which his ‘Shake Edits 1’ sold out within the first day. Alongside highly anticipated forthcoming releases on SHAKE, he’ll be bringing the dance even further with a steady run of gigs already booked for the rest of 2016.
Shedbug may be 21, but his reputation already precedes him in the Melbourne dance community. His sometimes raw, sometimes dreamy DJ sets have earned him prime gigs around Melbourne. He’s also started touring an all-hardware live set, which showcases his dusty and expansive production chops evident in tracks like ‘Captain’ and his ‘Acceptance’ EP. On top of his own releases, he’s even launched a record label – Salt Mines. Co-founded with fellow Melbourne lo-fi extraordinaire Rudolf C, Salt Mines is fast becoming a highly respected vinyl-only imprint. The pair will hit the European summer with their serious talent this year. With such acceleration in style and skill since he started DJing at 18, there’s no doubt Shedbug will continue to take us on a journey of wild and wonderful sounds.
