On the hallowed eve of the 31st of October, we will be throwing our annual Halloween party down at The Beaver Works! In the Red Room we will be celebrating 20 years of Freerange Records and will be welcoming Dutch masters of soul-infused house music, Detroit Swindle, alongside the legendary selector and Freerange head honcho, Jimpster. In the basement we are very excited to play host to an Aus Music showcase, with the esteemed label’s founder Will Saul and former Leeds resident and much anticipated upcoming album debutant, Youandewan.

Detroit Swindle was formed in 2011 by Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets. It all started after Lars - who was programming a few nightclubs in Amsterdam - had to fire Maarten for playing too much underground music. They started talking and found out they had a mutual love for Motown, hip-hop and early house music. Not long after, they started making music together and the rest as they say, is history. When trying to define their ‘success’, it’s hard to pin it down to just one thing. Perhaps it’s their talent to find that typical groove that has been so widely acclaimed. Or maybe it’s their ability to connect musical styles spanning over more than 5 decades (and continents) into their sets and productions in such a way that you’re always curious to hear what comes next. Or could it be because they’re always on the move, searching for that new thing to challenge themselves in their productions and live sets. Whatever it is, it’s keeping them rather busy. Apart from their own Heist Recordings, Detroit Swindle have released music on renowned labels like Freerange, Future Classics, Dirt Crew (where they released their well received debut album ‘Boxed Out’), Tsuba, Classic Music Company, Kaoz Theory and many more. The boys are as much enthusiastic record diggers and synth hunters as they are lovers of modern day electronic music. We look forward to welcoming them to their first Flux.
Taste-maker, label boss, producer, DJ, remixer. Jamie Odell wears many hats and wears them well. Under his Jimpster alias, he has become one the most revered deep house producer/DJs operating on the scene today. His esteemed labels Freerange and Delusions of Grandeur continue to help break incredible new music and equally impressive acts such as Detroit Swindle, Tornado Wallace and Session Victim. From his UK base, Jimpster has inadvertently become a standard-bearer and custodian of the authentic house sound, and carries this flag to the four corners of the world. As he puts it: House music has been my first love and passion since hearing 'Strings Of Life' for the first time at The Essex Barn in 1988 and I'm still inspired by the memories I have of that period when the whole electronic music scene was so fresh and exciting as well as being really broad and eclectic. Certainly as a producer I am still striving to produce that perfect house track which will stand the test of time in the same way that those early classics have. The blueprint is simple: to inject life, depth, soul, sincerity and attitude. This is what sets the players apart from the pretenders. That challenge is what keeps me focused and inspired 25 years on and I'm sure it will keep me on my toes for the years to come.” Jimpster continues to do the business at globally renowned hotspots like Fabric, Air and Watergate and, with a slew of new music on the way, the ideas flowing freely and with over two decades of experience to draw on, we see clearly that the fire is still burning as brightly as ever.
Will was born in Taunton, Somerset in 1978 and is the producer and DJ behind Simple Records and Aus Music. Always surrounded by music, his musical path has developed gradually. Growing up his parents encouraged him to play the piano, sax and timpani, each of which he disliked at the time. He started buying records at eight - motown, soul, R&B, film scores - and diligently recorded the Top 40 on Sunday afternoons. Before his teens he'd begun collecting hip-hop and by sixteen was into dance music. Trekking to clubs across England every weekend inspired him to get a job and save up enough cash for two turntables and a mixer. For such a passionate collector, DJing was a revelation. Two years later he won Muzik's mixtape talent contest Bedroom Bedlam. After two years working in Sony International's A&R department following his degree he left to set up a label with friends. They called it Simple, to reflect their open-minded intention to release good music, of whatever genre. It His sound is based in deep dubdiscohousetechno with flashes of soul and irresistible melodies that hark back to the early days of Detroit (from Motown to Planet E). Will's other label of love - Aus Music – has consistently explored more cutting edge leftfield sounds and over the years has developed into a home for a range of unique artists - from the live dub of Sideshow (Fink on Ninja Tune), through to the bass driven house & techno of Joy Orbison, Scuba, Pearson Sound & Appleblim via the richly textured grooves of Lee Jones & his MyMy project and not forgetting Cottam and his lowslung, hypnotic house. The current crop of artists that Aus is working with include Bicep, Dusky, George FitzGerald and Midland.
“I'm shy, nervous and anxious about life, says Ewan Smith aka Youandewan. You can tell that by his music, be it the doleful, dubby remixes of Maya Jane Coles, Gerry Read or Sei A he's turned in, or the garage-tinged originals he has crafted for Skream's Disfigured Dubs and London's non-specific bass hub, 2nd Drop. Of course, there's also the notable 1988 (the first thing he ever produced and which was never intended to see the light of day) and a remix of Dusky's Lost in You which regularly gets spun in the dusty dungeons of Berlin's Berghain. But none of these really sum-up the reticent Leeds lad, now a Berlin resident, for his loosely house and bass leaning sound is forever on the move. As a DJ, Youandewan's cultured and considered sets originally earned him a residency at Leeds night System and have gone on to take to headlining intimate parties across the UK and Europe on a regular basis. Though he prefers hiding to over-hyping, for those who know, they know… With his debut album ‘There Is No Right Time’ out on Aus in October, there’s been no better time to see for yourself.
