About his new book, Derren says:
“I’ve been writing Happy over the last three years. I had been reading the great French essayist Montaigne, and was curious to know about Seneca, the ancient philosopher to whom he kept referring. This led to a discovery of Stoicism, which resonated with me hugely, and informs much of the drive of the book. The notions of positive thinking and goal-setting have always sat uncomfortably with me and, I am convinced, lead more often to anxiety than happiness.
“There may not be an easy secret to happiness, but there are effective ways we can approach it indirectly, or even, perhaps, deciding it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. I hope the book will give people a richer insight into the kinds of themes that have affected my work over the last few years, and offer some strategies and ways of thinking that encourage a more considered and flourishing life.”
