WEDNESDAY 30 NOVEMBER
Entrance, recently signed to Thrill Jockey, is the multi-talented singer-songwriter Guy Blakeslee. An artist’s artist, Entrance is a musician with the blues running through his veins. His newest creations add up to a set of rich, cinematic songs featuring expansive orchestration and imaginative story telling, as unique to himself as they are, at times, evocative of Townes Van Zandt, Scott Walker and Gene Clark. Among his fans, he counts the likes of Spike Jonze, who featured Entrance’s interpretation of Skip James’ “I’m So Glad” in the film “Her.”
Continuing in this vein, his Thrill Jockey debut, the emotive production “Promises” was released in September of this year. Recent shows have seen Entrance drawing on material from a forthcoming 2017 album in a series of select shows throughout Europe & the US. Both solo and with his new band, Entrance’s performances are deeply moving emotional experiences that linger on long after the lights have come on.
Like a series of Jacques Brel chansons sung by Ian Dury Love, the debut EP release by ascendant Liverpool based singer James Canty is a sterling showcase of the vocalist's idiosyncratic songwriting talent.
Influenced by musicians who initially found fame in the early 1960s folk movement: Bob Dylan, Pete Seegar, Paul Simon on to 1970s songsmiths: Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Townes Van Zandt via Radiohead and Cass McCombs, the wordsmith James calls to mind most readily is the aforementioned Ian Dury. - Bearded Magazine
