DESCRIPTION
A legendary piano soloist visits Vermont for our March concert: Joseph Kalichstein, performing Beethoven’s second piano concerto. The program begins on a solemn note with the adagietto movement from Mahler’s fifth symphony. It is unusual to perform only excerpted movements from symphonies, with the exception of this staggeringly gorgeous piece, which is regularly performed without the accompanying movements. Following the piano concerto, the program closes with the last symphony Mozart ever wrote, Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter.” Mozart’s brilliance is undeniable here– this masterpiece stands atop the summit of the symphonic repertory, even centuries after its premiere. Jaime Laredo is well known as a brilliant interpreter of Mozart, making for a truly memorable evening.
