In 2009, Puppeteer Jim Hammond left his position as one of the Puppetmasters of Broadway's “The Lion King” to open his studio Puppet Network in Fort Lauderdale. Over the last 8 years the studio, now located at The Pride Center in partnership with ArtServe, invites regional artists throughout the year to collaborate on community spectacles that involve giant puppets, costumes, parades and ancient traditions.
In 2010, this exhibition’s curator Janet Luru Rudawsky, a clay artist and event producer, worked with Mr. Hammond to found and produce the Florida Day of the Celebration. Now after it’s 7th year this November 2nd, the spectacle involves thousands from our community who dress in traditional and skeletal garb to memorialize those who have died.
In this exhibition, you will experience community created puppets from Fort Lauderdale’s Dr. Sistrunk & St. Patrick’s Day Parades as well as photographs and art from the community of artists who produce the Florida Day of the Dead Celebration each year.
