American songwriter, producer and arranger Matthew E White joins forces with British singer-songwriter Flo Morrissey to perform songs from their collaborative album, Gentlewoman, Ruby Man.
This is a duet performance in the classic mould, the type you don’t see much anymore – Sonny & Cher, Nancy & Lee, Serge & Jane. Matt & Flo. Performing a series of covers, the songs selected displaying a playful diversity, ranging from classics by Leonard Cohen and Roy Ayers to more recent tracks by Frank Ocean and James Blake. Melding White’s southern-fried R&B arrangements with Morrissey’s beautiful pastoral voice, this is a live celebration of the creative energy found in collaboration.
Their correspondence began after White read a piece on Morrissey’s Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful next to a review of his album. Talks of collaboration led to their first meeting at the Barbican’s Tribute to Lee Hazelwood concert in 2015, Love and Other Crimes, dueting on ‘Some Velvet Morning’. Their deep artistic connection grew into Gentlewoman, Ruby Man, an album of duets recorded at White’s Spacebomb studios in Richmond, Virginia and due to be released on Glassnote in 2016.
