DESCRIPTION
Glinka's Kamarinskaya pioneered the symphonic arrangement of Russian folk tunes. The Russian symphonic school is all in Kamarinskaya as the whole oak is in the acorn, wrote Tchaikovsky. In his own Violin Concerto, Tchaikovsky made the virtuosity of the soloist sparkle against a lyrical backdrop. Later, an exquisite slow movement gives way to a folk-inspired finale that serves up a dazzling array of pyrotechnics. Benjamin Beilman’s skillful approach will masterfully navigate Tchaikovsky’s inspired score. Finally, the program is rounded out with Shostakovich's delightful and studiously apolitical Ninth — a thoroughly engaging comedy of musical wit.
