OLD BONES Promotions presents a stellar line up, three of the most exciting folk bands in the land, all in one night.
Stick in the Wheel
Stick In The Wheel are “ripping apart the preconceptions surrounding folk music” (Clash Music). Their now-trademark abrasive delivery of both original and traditional tracks, is not bland retroism, or empty nostalgia, but a voice linking now to then. Brought up in the thriving culture of working class London and cutting their teeth in its diverse musical landscape, they now bring those influences and attitudes to their traditional music. Stripped back to their bare components, their songs speak for themselves without ornament, telling tales of everyday life: carboot-swindlers, lorry drivers and London rioters, sitting seamlessly against traditional songs of prisons, hammer-wielding blacksmiths and 17th century madhouses.
The debut album From Here earned them multiple BBC Folk Award nominations (Best Group 2016, Best Traditional Track for Seven Gypsies 2016, Best Emerging Act 2015, Best Traditional Track for Bedlam 2015), fRoots Album of the Year 2015, with four star album reviews in the Guardian, Observer, Mojo, R2 Magazine, Record Collector and appearances on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, BBC Radio 3 Late Junction and BBC Radio 2’s Folk Show.
“A shot in the arm for contemporary folk music” – The Independent
“Rich in attitude and uncompromising intent” – MOJO
“Urgent, tragic and triumphant” – The Observer
“A great live band” – The Guardian
The Langan Band
Glasgow power-trio the Langan Band have travelled a long way since winning a Danny Kyle Open Stage Award at Celtic Connections 2008 – not least musically, with their brilliantly tempestuous sound encompassing “a veritable United Nations of musical influences” (Folk Radio UK), including Celtic, Balkan, Gypsy and flamenco elements, fuelled by visceral punk spirit.
With a deceptively stripped down line-up of vocals, guitar, fiddle, bass and percussion, they released their debut album, Bones of Contention, to ecstatic reviews in 2013, following up two years later with the double disc I’m Alive/Live at the Globe.
“Extraordinary stylistic dexterity…uncategorisable and irresistible” – (Acoustic Magazine)
Young Waters (formerly Snufkin - the band)
Silky vocals jangle towards rousing harmonies between beautiful violin solos and finely mastered acoustic guitar from twisted neo-folk band Young Waters. Expect exhilarating toe-tapping rhythm and lifting intricate melodies.
Young Waters burst onto the London / Bristol folk scene in 2015 as Snufkin and have been making quite a name for themselves ever since. With a live album, ‘Live from The Fayre’ (recorded live at Rollright Fayre) and a host of festival appearances (Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Wilderness, Boomtown and Smugglers) under their belts, they rounded off an incredible six months by winning Bath Folk Festival’s New Shoots Competition.
“Energetic, original, with excellent stage presence and varied, enchanting material. Snufkin are accomplished musicians who wowed our judges and thoroughly engaged our festival audience who, young and older, responded with enthusiasm. They were extremely deserving winners of the Bath Folk Festival New Shoots Competition 2016.” – Bath Folk Festival
